Camping in the swiss alps

Camping is a must-do when it comes to Switzerland. The landscape and the mountains make you feel like staying outdoors all the time. And for us, spending time outside in the nature is a really important part of our lives. So we finally decided to continue our passion for camping just like we used to in Canada and the States.

So we recently visited Camping Des Glaciers and we just went WOW at the first look of the campsite.

We stayed here in August and this campsite is one of the most amazingly scenic places we have ever stayed - the pitches to choose from are either across an alpine meadow or, as we chose, in terraces heading up towards the base of the glacier. The views are absolutely stunning - every direction and hour of the day highlights something new to be blown away by. There are walks to suit everyone here from families (like us) to serious climbers and La Fouly provides a couple of bars and a pizza house. We spent 6 nights here and barely felt like we had scratched the surface of this area. The campsite provisions are very good, the shower block is kept clean with hot water 24 hrs and the kids enjoyed the play area with a giant trampoline. The reception was welcoming and helpful (and multi- lingual) and you can order bread/croissant for the mornings from there. The electric points for campervans can be quite far away so you may need a long cable. There is not a huge amount of touristy things to do in the area but we did enjoy a day out in Martigny to the brilliantly named 'Barryland' - a St. Bernard rescue centre and museum. We can see ourselves returning to this campsite many times in the future.

Arrived in the dark, had seen the photos and spent plenty of time in the Alps, but the next morning I got up around 6 for an early trip to the loo. I'm not allowed use inappropriate language in a review but JFC, when I opened the caravan door and saw/heard/smelled/felt the glacier and valley in front of me I had to express myself. The campsite is laid out with lots of space between pitches and matches perfectly the surrounds and needs of its (active) campers. The toilet block was close, power readily available, but you might need a 10m+ lead for some pitches. It was shockingly cheap for a tent pitch and very reasonably priced for caravans. Reception was very helpful and multi-lingual. Mainly Dutch campers with the rest French and a few Belgian and German. It's on the Mt. Blanc circuit so is quite busy with small tent pitchers. Wifi has useful range but is best used from the common room.

Room Tip: Go for a caravan/pitch with a view of the glacier. The block furthest down the river seemed to have...

The views were amazing and the direct access to hikes was super convenient. The bathroom facilities were very clean and showers were always warm. Freezer space is limited, so be wary of that. Wifi is available at the reception.

We stayed here for three weeks during a driving tour of the Alps. By far this was my favourite campsite. The scenery is just breathtaking, with the campsite nestling right in the crook of the mountains, rivers running down both sides and the glacier glistening above. Pitches are a good size and we were given a choice of many. We could have had the glade or a terraced pitch. We went for the terrace, and enjoyed waking up to the views of the mountains. The pitches are good, they are a nice size, clean and flat. You will need strong pegs however as the ground is rocky. The staff on the site are extremely welcoming and really made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. Showers are clean and hot and there are comment fridges that you can use free of charge. You can order your breakfast from the small shop, hire maps and book outings. I'd definitely stay here again.
